Waltz's argument stems directly from the logic of nuclear deterrence and the balance of power, a concept he reinvigorated in his seminal text "Man, the State, and War". I met Waltz for the first and only time at a small conference at Yale last year. And this is true not only of Theory but also of much of his other work, including Man, the State, and War. His Columbia University doctoral dissertation was published in 1959 as Man, the State, and War. What is their general argument that they are making now about Israel? His two classics, Man, the State and War, and, Theory of International Politics, even as a Marxist, had a great impact on my thinking. I really enjoyed "Man, the State, and War" by Walt, and I've read a few of Mearsheimer's articles. Waltz's version was to admit a degree of greater complexity, something he outlined in Man, State and War (1959). Our military is fighting multiple wars of aggression on foreign soil and is needlessly based in over 130 nations. - That one is easy; it is Professor Ola Listhaug, no doubt about that. His most famous work is Man, the State, and War.) And who is your favorite social scientist? Kenneth Waltz, the most important Realist theorist of the last half-century, died Monday, a few weeks before his 89th birthday.
